I’ve built up a few communities over the last few years, (mindofastoic and minimalgoods), but have relied way too much on social media as I look back on both.
In hindsight, I wish I had put all of that effort into a site that I have full control over, keeping me outside of the whim of the Instagram algorithm gods.
That said, I’m starting up a new site focused on a particular niche that I’m interested in, and that has the potential to start bringing in some passive income.
I’m not going to reveal the niche in order to not draw any additional attention to it, which is something I learned a few years ago after sharing as much data around minimalgoods as I could. After I did that, someone ended up taking all of my growth insights, scraped my IG account for content, and has built up an IG presence with over 100,000 followers on the back of all the work I had done.
Not falling for that again.
The plan
Output is the name of the game when it comes to publishing content. I’ve hired 5 writers on Upwork, and my goal is to be posting at least 1 article per day until I hit 100 posts.
From there, I’m going to see what’s working, and what’s not, then reassess the strategy from there.
The goal
My primary goal is to hit 50,000 unique viewers per month, then apply for a premium ad service like mediavine, in order to generate daily income through display advertising.
I’ve got a few other ideas when it comes to monetization, but I’m going to hold off to see if I can get the traffic up to that point first.
The competition
My main risk with this new site is that there are a few large players on the field as it is. I’ve noticed the quality of their content is absolute shit though, so I’ll be coming in from an angle of quality over quantity, similar to my previous projects.
I’m bucking down for the slow grind on this one, and have planned to commit to this posting schedule for the next year.
In order to keep this process public and transparent, I’m going to be using this space to post monthly progress on what went right, what went wrong, as well as all the costs associated with the project.
